Change your mind, change your reality. I don’t remember who originally said this, but it fits well with Western traditions, which assert that the material world is only a small portion of the total Universe. The material world, the world of illusion as the Yogi's would have it, is in many ways a product of the mind. Does this really mean that tangible reality can be changed as simply as changing our beliefs about it? I’m afraid the answer is not the simple “yes” that we all might like.
While manifested existence, in an absolute sense, is indeed effected by our perceptions and intentions, no single individual can claim the full credit or blame for its nature at any given moment. This world is a world which we share with every living being. Our tangible reality is not merely created by our own minds, but exists as part of a much larger Universe. Well has it been noted that the mere act of observation has an effect on matter, this effect is generally observed on such a minute level as to serve little direct purpose. For all intents and purposes, material reality is objectively outside of our control, except so far as we can affect it through our own physical actions. Or is it?
Perhaps we should be grateful that every stray thought does not produce immediate tangible changes in the world around us, for in my experience most humans spend an unfortunate amount of time fixating on thoughts and feelings which would be less than ideal if they immediately took shape before our eyes. Further, it is patently false to think that every time somebody is the victim of circumstances outside of their own control that they must have had some thought which brought it upon themselves. Tragically, many followers of populist new age thinking believe just this, and conveniently absolve themselves of any sense of duty to aid or alleviate the misfortune of others.
On the other hand, as any advanced practitioner can attest, powerful thoughts can and often do have tangible results. While the most common occurrences of thought affecting reality are no more than the manipulation of chance happenings, such soft magic is by no means the only way in which subtle power can and does reshape our tangible material plane. Why then are there not numerous documented occurrences of events which violate the accepted laws of physics? Well, actually, there are.
While the disciplined academic is likely to discount any report of paranormal activity which is not replicable under the scrutiny of scientists, and produce well-reasoned explanations for why the people who saw such occurrences with their own eyes must have either misinterpreted what they saw, been fooled by a charlatan, or are simply themselves lying, the ongoing preponderance of eye witness accounts outside of laboratory settings is worth noting, including the reports many highly educated people, who often lost their careers for their candor.
Is there some reason that scientific observation seems to be anathema to occurrences of events which do not fit within the defined laws of physics? Well, actually yes. First we have to take note of the many researchers whose reputations and careers were destroyed by their own reports of events which do not fit within the accepted paradigm. We cannot blame the scientific community for disregarding these reports, for it is central to their discipline to only validate observations which are replicable. It is a central assumption upon which the subsequent logic of their entire discipline is based. So when one of their number reports an occurrence which other researchers later fail to replicate, this is seen as evidence that the first report was either the result of poor experimental controls, or was outright falsified. Within their understanding of the universe, they have to discount such testimony, and would feel that they were propagating a lie if they did not discredit the aberrant reporting. This does not mean however that these multitudinous accounts of paranormal occurrences were not at least sometimes perfectly accurate.
To understand this, we must return to the traditional assertions that a) our tangible reality is indeed effected by perception, and b) every being which perceives also has some influence. The difficulty lies in the fact that no single mind can take either the full credit, nor the full blame, for the state of the material world at any given moment. Literally every conscious being which perceives is directly involved in affecting the object of perception. Even beyond this, our dense plane of existence has its own form of inertia which holds patterns of energy into formation. The material world is largely energy held into form by consciousness, which we often perceive as thought... that does not mean that you the individual are the only reason the world exists.
The great folly of the so-called New Age is to think that the universe has no objective reality except that which is perceived by the individual. This is a misunderstanding of occult and mystical doctrine. While the Consciousness of the Universe does indeed live in each of us, that does not mean that our own individual Consciousness is that of the entire Universe. Not even the collective consciousness of all of humanity combined accounts for a significant percentage of the Whole. As we expand our Awareness, we experience many instances of Cosmic Union, and in these moments truly feel that we are united with the whole of Creation, but even in these exalted states of being we are microcosmic still, in relation to the Whole. No matter how far your individual expansion extents, there is still that which is outside of yourself.
One of the many aspects of the greater Mind is the so-called Matrix, the Cabalistic Da’ath, which holds our reality into form. It does so through a form of inertia, or resistance to change, which I’ll refer to here as gravitas to differentiate from the physical phenomenon of gravity. Try not to get caught up on the semantics...
All of our material existence is energy, consciousness dictates the behavior of said energy, including the physical laws which govern our world. Without this immense consciousness maintaining its consistency, our physical universe simply would not be able to exist, and all would return to the primal sea of light which Cabalists call Ain Soph Aur, or Limitless Light. Manifest existence requires this gravitas to contain the awesome energy from which it formed.
So how does this all relate to the question of personal intentions and beliefs effecting matter directly? Well, quite simply, the stuff of our own consciousness is the same as that which holds this whole thing together, just in smaller measure. Intensely unified thoughts can temporarily counteract the gravitas which holds all of these physical laws together. The minds of several individuals, unified in faith or belief have a stronger force than a single mind alone, so when several people apply their intentions with perfect unity, even the base laws of our material realm can be temporarily changed.
So why is it that scientific observation seems to be anathema to the production of paranormal phenomena? Quite simply, the balance of forces at work already heavily favors the normal patterns of how energy behaves. In the rare instances when a few minds can combine to bend or even break the rules, it takes very, very little to tip the balance back toward the norm. One additional human mind directly observing the material in question seems to generally be more than enough to guarantee that even several wills combined cannot overcome the gravitas of our material plane. And in the few instances where that is not the case, the scientific observer would be well advised to under-report the phenomenon, for the likelihood of replication is vanishing small, while the likelihood of professional censure is great.
Thankfully, trying to overpower the force of gravitas which holds our observable universe into form is far from the only way in which we can apply our conscious energy, and many of the other applications are not only useful, but Enlightening. Our universe is not simple, and neither are we. Simply because there are laws which hold it all together does not mean that we as individuals are limited to simply accept whatever lot is ours to have. We simply need to understand that some parts of the illusion are far more resistant to change than others, and focus our willpower on aspects of existence which are more naturally receptive to our influence and perception. Trust me, there is plenty to learn without worrying about telekinesis or levitation just yet…
